On the same day two weeks ago, Ohioans saw the following diverging headlines:

In the Cleveland Plain Dealer: "Republic Steel to add 450 jobs to Lorain as oil and gas exploration booms." This story reported Republic Steel's announcement of new jobs in one of Ohio's hardest-hit counties, to manufacture products in support of the state's growing oil and gas industry.

  • Treasurer Josh Mandel

  • Alan Johnson

Until recently, a state treasurer employee was making a round trip to a Cleveland bank five days a week, transporting an average of $11million a day in checks written to the state of Ohio.

The Great Recession has now earned the dubious right of being compared to the Great Depression. In the face of the most stimulative fiscal and monetary policies in our history, we have experienced the loss of over 7 million jobs, wiping out every job gained since the year 2000. From the moment the Obama administration came into office, there have been no net increases in full-time jobs, only in part-time jobs. This is contrary to all previous recessions. Employers are not recalling the workers they laid off from full-time employment.

  • Sen. Marco Rubio

Today, Florida struggles with a 10.6 percent unemployment rate, far higher than the national average of 9.1 percent. The jobless rate in my state is far higher than 8 percent — the level that the president promised his stimulus would keep unemployment from exceeding.
